Microsoft Copilot is a powerful assistant for individual tasks in Excel. However, it does not automate entire end-to-end processes from the ERP export to the final report.
The month-end close is complete. The figures have been reported. Now, the question arises as to how new tools like Microsoft Copilot can make work easier for the finance team. Since its introduction, there have been many promises of efficiency. An initial, sober look at practical reports and a simulated Copilot for finance productivity study now reveals where the real advantages lie – and where the limits are.
What Copilot Achieves in Excel: The Assistant for Individual Tasks
Microsoft Copilot is an assistant directly within Excel. It speeds up individual, repetitive tasks. These include formatting cells, creating charts, or summarising data in a PivotTable (New Horizons 2025). A controller can use it to quickly create a visualisation in response to a request or to identify trends in an existing dataset. The benefit lies in accelerating discrete work steps.
This support saves time at the micro-level. Manual analysis within an already prepared table is accelerated. For ad-hoc analyses and the quick creation of graphics, Copilot is a useful tool. It helps the user to interpret and present existing data more quickly.
The Limit of AI: Where Copilot Does Not Automate
Copilot does not automate entire processes from start to finish. It does not connect to the ERP system to export data. Nor does it automatically consolidate data from various sources into a target document. Its work only begins once the data is already in Excel.
The chain from the ERP export to the finished management report often remains manual. It involves exporting raw data, copying and pasting into Excel templates, and manually adjusting formulas. These steps are error-prone and tie up valuable time in the finance team. Copilot operates within the target file, not between systems.
For such end-to-end automation, specialised tools are necessary. These include RPA (Robotic Process Automation) solutions or direct interfaces between the ERP and Excel (ClickUp 2025). These tools go beyond Copilot's capabilities, as they can control the entire data flow.
The Real Efficiency Gain: Automating the Chain
The sustainable efficiency gain for finance teams comes from automating entire routines (Velixo 2024). It is not just about speeding up individual tasks. It is about making the entire process from data import to the final report robust and repeatable.
The goal is a system in which data flows from the ERP into the Excel model without manual intervention. There are various technical approaches to this. The choice of method depends on the complexity and volume of the data (ECOSIRE 2026).
- CSV/Excel import: Suitable for simple, standardised data exports from the ERP.
- API-based import: More flexible and robust for complex data structures from multiple sources.
- Direct database access: Offers the highest speed and control, often for large data volumes.
Such automation ensures data integrity. It significantly reduces the risk of errors. The finance team gains time for analysis and interpretation instead of manual data preparation.
Copilot as Part of the Solution, Not the Whole Solution
Nevertheless, proficiency in using Copilot is valuable. It sharpens the understanding of the possibilities of artificial intelligence in the finance sector. Copilot can play to its strengths after the data has already been automatically imported and consolidated.
A controller can use Copilot to quickly visualise or summarise an automatically generated variance analysis. The core process is automated and robust. Copilot serves for refinement and quick ad-hoc analysis. It is a useful tool, but not the foundation of automation.
Your Next Step
Skopa GmbH is a Swiss consulting and automation firm for finance teams. We automate the Excel layer that exists around your ERP system. We do not replace the ERP itself.
Our focus is on the chain from the ERP export through recurring reports to the final submissions. We help you to make this process secure and repeatable.
An engagement always begins with a free and non-binding initial consultation. In this meeting, we clarify your specific situation. Scope, prices, and timelines are discussed there, never before.
